The Best Honeymoon Destinations in Greece for Romance

Seeking a Greek honeymoon paradise that makes the perfect setting for romance? We’ve picked six of our favourite romantic honeymoon destinations in Greece, from famous destinations to countryside retreats to cities with plenty of traditional charm.

  1. The Famous Destination: Santorini

Santorini’s iconic sun-bleached white and blue buildings and hilly, cobbled streets have probably made an appearance or two on your Instagram feed. But this in-vogue island paradise has become a coveted holiday destination for many excellent reasons beyond its picture-perfect architecture.

Thera, as it’s known in Greek, is one of the largest islands in the Cyclades island group and was formed by massive volcanic eruptions millennia ago. It’s dramatic landscape, made up of black beaches, striking cliffside homes and quaint avenues, has inspired painters and poets from across the country.

Now, Santorini is a stylish destination for honeymooners and holiday makers alike. Hop between the chic bars and eateries before dancing the night away at a lively establishment. And during the day, take a daytrip to nearby volcanic islands Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, which can only be reached by boat.

  1. The Traditionally Greek Destination: Ioannina

Looking for a real taste of Greek life on your honeymoon? Ioannina, located in Epirus, northwestern Greece, is bursting with Hellenic charm. This city has a rich history and plenty of sites to explore, including the Castle of Ioannina which boasts citadels from the Ottoman and Byzantine periods. Pay a visit to Ioannina Archeological Museum, where you’ll find palaeolithic-era artefacts from the ruins of Dodona and its Oracle – thought to be the oldest Greek oracle ever discovered.

Ioannina is situated next to the sprawling Lake Pamvotis (meaning provider in Greek), so you can fill your downtime with strolls along its peaceful shores. Looking for a change of scenery? Explore the magical passages of the Cave of Perama, which was accidentally unearthed in 1940 by residents escaping bomb attacks. You can also take a boat trip across to Ioannina Island: a quaint fishing port that will give you a real taste of Greek life.

  1. The Rural Destination: Mount Pelion

Venture down to Thessaly in south-eastern Greece and you’ll find the mountainous villages of Pelion. Fancy staying in a traditional guesthouse and immersing yourself in Ancient Greek mythology? This could be the ideal Greek honeymoon destination for you.

According to legend, Mount Pelion was once home to Centaurs – half human, half horse hybrids – who had a destructive influence over the weather. And while you won’t find the creatures here now, you can take the Centaur’s Path to and from the village of Portaria to snap some of the area’s stunning landscapes.

Foodies will love the area’s gastronomic delights, including seafood from Pagasitikos Gulf, and nearby city Volos’s famous drink, Tsipouradika – a brandy drink made from leftover pomace in wine presses. While you’re there, make time to explore its many ancient artefacts, including remnants from Iolkos, homeland of hero Jason and his faithful Argonauts.

  1. The Island Destinations: Corfu & Rhodes

Seeking an island escape? The popular holiday destinations of Corfu and Rhodes are so much more than their beautiful sandy beaches. You’ll find plenty of romantic corners and countless historic remnants to explore on both.

Corfu is the land of myth and unbelievable history. It has given birth to stories such as Nausica’s tale (who was said to have saved Odysseus from his shipwreck) and landmarks including the Achilleion Palace of sad Austrian empress Sissi and UNESCO World Heritage site Corfu Old Town. If you conquer the main island, you can also take a trip to Pontikonisi, or Mouse Island, to visit the famous Pantokrator Monastery.

Rhodes is Corfu’s historic twin in many ways, with its own UNESCO World Heritage site. The Acropolis of Lindos is just one of this island’s must-see attractions. However, the city of Mandraki offers plenty of modern delights, including restaurants, upmarket clubs and a gorgeous marina that’s ideal for lazy afternoon strolls.

  1. The City Destination: Kavala City

Up in the Macedonia region of northern Greece is Kavala. This vibrant city, which rises up from the harbour in impressive fashion, is a true melting pot of cultures. In the early 20th century, many people flocked to the city from the east, meaning you’ll spot both Eastern and Western influences during your stay.

Palia Poli (old town) is where you’ll find Kavala’s best relics and architectural gems, like the Ottoman Imaret and its magical citrus orchards. You can also enjoy the incredible views from the city’s castle as you take in the sprawling metropolis below. And in Nea Poli (new town), there are dramatic 16th century Kamares that were once part of a huge viaduct system.

Kavala is also known for its exceptional meze feasts. Thanks to its coastal location, you’ll be spoilt for choice if you fancy a taste of the ocean. Pair fresh seafood with ouzo or local wine to finish the evening off in style.

  1. My Favourite Destination: Monemvasia

Monemvasia is ideal for secluded honeymoons, as it’s located on an island linked to the Peloponnese mainland by a short causeway. This small island is dominated by an intimidating medieval fortress and you’ll find gorgeous Byzantine churches and historic walls down virtually every cobbled street. There will be plenty of chances to snap pictures of the sprawling mainland and relics of the past during your time here.

Nearby, you’ll find lots of other fascinating places to explore. Head to Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage site on Mount Taygetos that started life as an impressive amphitheatre. Or, take a trip to Mani, a raw, rugged town with towers, historic churches and residents who claim to be direct descendants of the warriors of Sparta.
